Micro LED will become a potential micro display technology for ar/vr devices

according to insiders, the current rapid development of ar/vr applications has driven the demand for micro display devices. These micro display devices currently mainly use LCOS, HTPs and AMOLED display technologies, but in the long run, inorganic micro LED display technology can be comparable to the mainstream technology of current micro display applications

according to the source, micro displays have previously been used as electronic viewfinder (EVF) in digital cameras, but since the emergence of built-in camera intelligence, the market demand for micro displays has gradually become weak. With the gradual popularization of materials/VR devices that are constrained by AR, micro display devices begin to return to the growth track due to the application in smart glasses and head mounted displays (HMDS)

according to the data provided by the Japanese Market Research Institute Fuji chimera Research Institute, for the above three major micro display technologies, silicon based liquid linear wide crystal (LCOS) accounted for 59.7% of the market share in 2018, followed by AMOLED (27.8%) and HTPs (6.6%)

at the same time, the global micro display market reached US $161million in 2018, including US $96million for LCOS devices, US $55million for AMOLED and US $10million for HTPs

it is estimated that the market size of AMOLED micro display will grow to $750million in 2021, with an average annual compound growth rate of 10.9%, and the average unit price will reach $32, 35% higher than the average unit price of LCOS and HTPs

at present, AR glasses equipped with AMOLED panels have been listed, but OLED technology still has great room for improvement in luminous efficiency, production cost and panel service time. Because micro led performs better than OLED in terms of power consumption, brightness, luminous efficiency, response time, panel service time and temperature adaptability, some manufacturers believe that micro LED can also be used in micro display technology

however, industry insiders said that micro LED technology is not mature enough for normal applications, because there are still many technical bottlenecks to be solved, including epitaxial wafer process, massive transfer, defect detection and current drive

at this CES 2019, Plessey, a leading developer of optoelectronic technology solutions in the UK, showed AR and VR glasses equipped with micro led developed in cooperation with Vuzix, an American smart glasses startup. The company said that compared with traditional OLEDs, its microleds can provide 10 times the resolution, 100 times the contrast and 1000 times the brightness. In addition, the power consumption of the device has been reduced by half, thereby extending the battery life of portable handheld devices. Energy efficiency, environmental protection and product quality must be comprehensively considered twice
